Slide 1: Introduction: “Small things make us happy”

Hello, we are Mincing Hotpot. Don’t ask why. We are undertaking the Orange ‘optimism’ brief because it offers scope for our collective strengths and weaknesses to be exploited to full effect and we feel we are an optimistic team in general.

Slide 2: Book photographs and brief expl.

We propose to produce a kind of anthology of inspirational and positive imagery based around the small, pleasant things in life that make us happy.

This will take the form of a mixed media hardback book. We feel this to be an appropriate medium as it is the general consensus amongst the team that a book, presented appropriately, will have a personal nature and accessibility that would be readable, or in this case, viewable, pretty much anywhere.

The book will be of approximately A5 size. We have found this to be the optimal size for reasons of portability, an important aspect due to the fact the booklets will be sent through the post as a primary means of distribution. The product will also be available on purchase from or subscription to the Orange network.

The book will come in two main parts: the first half will consist of imagery, which will come in the form of photography, drawings and sketches. These will create a simple but effective set of optimistic images which most, if not all viewers will be able to relate to on some level. These will include such simple pleasures in life as taking a stroll in the park, images of summer and of childhood, a time free of pressures and responsibilities and a fresh, innocent perspective of the world.

In addition, more material imagery will be introduced, for example finding a pound on the floor and images of familiarity such as a cosy living room with a burning log fire will complement this.

Slide 8: dolls

Through this image of four dolls holding hands, which would be included in the anthology, we hope to conjure ideas of community and friendship, of the richness of cultural diversity. The dolls could be a central marketing/promotional image which would be replicated across different media platforms - be it printed, on-line or televisual.

The second part of the book will be left completely blank and open to individual customisation. People are encouraged to complete the book with their own perceptions of optimism. Things such as photographs, doodles, phone numbers, notes etc. can be added to the individual's personal taste.

The connotations with escapism coupled with the smell, feel and general atmosphere that surrounds the receiving of a new book will urge the reader to view and use the whole of the book from beginning to end.

In addition, the product will be packaged in gift-wrap style brown paper and addressed personally to the receiver to add an extra dimension of individuality and amicability to involve the customer in a more personal manner, generating a sense of importance.
